Based on the interest around my previous post, I thought I’d add some extra info for those of you who recently subscribed. I would wait to add this, but I don’t want to do you dirty like that, because you need to start those pitches NOW!!
While Holiday Gift Guides come out in November/December, journalists and curators are starting to receive submissions over the summer. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve talked to in the fall who are like, “how do you get on gift guides?” and I’m like… you’ll basically have to wait until next year at this point!!
From my experience, here are a few things to take into consideration:
Bigger brands have PR agents and relationships with outlets that write about their products year over year. They will likely slot those in no problem.
You need to start compiling your list and start outreach earlier than those bigger brands because sadly, you probably won’t hear back from the majority of your outreach.
I like to reach out mid-June with quick emails like: “Hi ____, Just thought I’d check in to see when you start rounding up your holiday gift guide?” Some people will respond saying “July” and then you have your foot in the door!
